We walk the streets every day. Yet somewhere along the way, our movements have been reduced to little more than a blue dot on the digital maps we carry in our hands. Destinations are calculated through optimized routes, and the journey itself is often measured only by an estimated time of arrival. While efficiency has undoubtedly increased, we may be gradually losing something else—the experience of wandering without purpose, encountering the unexpected, and sensing the world through our bodies rather than through a screen.
It is precisely this condition that artist Seirin Hyung examines in her practice. Working in response to the growing sense of alienation that emerges within an environment saturated by images, information, and digital interfaces, she seeks to recover bodily perception and the memory of place through painting. Rather than depicting specific landscapes, her works function as records of sensations—traces left on the body while moving through spaces, moments, and encounters.
The exhibition title, Drifting Blue Dot, draws inspiration from the concept of dérive proposed by the French Situationists. Meaning "drift" or "drifting," dérive refers to the act of moving through a city without a predetermined destination, surrendering oneself to chance encounters and the flow of perception. Departing from the logic of digital navigation, Hyung walks through actual streets, alleys, forests, coastlines, light, weather, and air. The subtle impressions gathered during these journeys are later translated into color, gesture, line, and rhythm on the canvas.
This exhibition presents approximately thirty drawings and paintings created between 2023 and the present. The works do not depict singular locations. Instead, they resemble maps of accumulated movement—visual records of a body continuously passing through unfamiliar terrains and shifting environments. Drifting Blue Dot traces the paths of wandering bodies and attentive gazes, revealing how memory is formed not through destinations but through moments of encounter.
After studying at the Glasgow School of Art in the United Kingdom, Hyung developed a practice shaped by movement across different geographies and cultural landscapes. In 2016, while staying at Dumfries House in Scotland, she wandered through forests and remote terrains where digital navigation felt increasingly irrelevant. Confronted by the scale and stillness of the natural environment, she experienced a temporary suspension of the accelerated rhythms of contemporary life. In 2018, journeys through Norway and Beijing presented contrasting yet equally profound impressions. Between the dramatic vastness of the Norwegian fjords and the immense urban density of Beijing, she became acutely aware of how small and fragile human movement can be within larger systems of nature and civilization. These experiences deepened her interest in the relationship between individual perception and the environments that shape it. Later, in Leipzig, Germany, in 2023, the artist further expanded the language of painting by incorporating objects collected from the streets into her works. In a city that transformed its historical scars and abandoned structures into sites of artistic renewal, fragments of everyday life became material traces of lived experience. The following year, her travels led her through Enschede in the Netherlands, and eventually to Jangdo Island in Yeosu, South Korea. Standing at the quiet threshold where sea and land converge, she paused for the first time to look back upon the many paths she had traversed. The scattered blue dots accumulated across continents gradually began to reveal themselves as a single, interconnected trajectory. Passing through Taipei in early 2026, those fragments of movement finally converge within this exhibition.
The blue dots collected by the artist are not GPS coordinates. They are moments that resist measurement: a sudden shaft of light that caused her to stop in an unfamiliar alley, the rhythm of breathing while ascending a hillside path, the texture of air remembered long after language fails to describe it. Rather than reproducing the visible world, her paintings seek to hold onto these fleeting sensations and preserve the traces they leave within the body. Ultimately, Hyung's work is not about movement itself. It is about perception. It is about the gradual fading of sensory experience within an increasingly data-driven world and about the enduring human desire to remain connected to the physical reality that surrounds us. Walking and painting share a similar structure: both unfold through time, both rely on attention, and both leave traces behind. As visitors move through the exhibition space, they too become drifting blue dots. And when they step back outside, they may find themselves looking differently at the path they have walked that day. The sensations that remain unmarked on maps, the coincidences that escape documentation, and the experiences that no system can fully record—perhaps these remain among the clearest signs that we are still alive. _____ Combineworks Art Director: Myoung Ju Kim
