Nana & Felix is an artist duo who has been actively working in both Europe and South Korea since 2013. In recent years, the artist duo has been working on reinterpreted urban landscapes, through means of satire and appropriation.
The starting point for this exhibition is the location of Combine Works and the unique landscape of Bukcheon hanok village and high risers hat opens up from the large window in the exhibition venue. As the first artists invited to exhibit in the newly opened space, Nana & Felix propose a play between the gallery space and the view outside, between past and present. The works that fill the gallery borrow elements from traditional Korean painting in portraying a modern, urban landscape formed of the relentless crave for building more, higher and faster
북촌 컴바인웍스 아트 스페이스는 첫 개관 전< 네포폴리스 Nephopolis >를 기획하여 나나와 펠릭스 듀오 작가와 함께 새 출발을 알린다.
네포폴리스는 고대 그리스어로 구름이라는 뜻의 네포스 néphos 와 도시라는 뜻의 폴리스 polis를 합성한 단어로 구름 도시라고 해석할 수 있다.
2013년부터 아티스트 듀오로서 유럽과 국내에서 활발하게 활동하고 있는 나나와 펠릭스 는 최근 몇 년간 주로 도시 환경을 풍자와 차용의 방식을 통해 새로운 형식의 풍경으로 재해석해 왔다.
컴바인웍스의 첫 번째 전시를 여는" 나나와 펠릭스" 는 전시 공간의 큰 창문을 통해 북촌의 역사적인 가옥들과 그 너머 고층 빌딩들이 한눈에 보이는 경관에 영감을 얻어, 도시 풍경을 재해석한 일련의 작품들을 선보인다.
한국 전통 회화의 모티브 및 스타일을 빌린 작품들은 더 많이, 더 높게, 그리고 더 빠르게 건물을 지으려는 멈출 수 없는 갈망을 과거와 현재의 통로를 통해 전달한다.

Nana & Felix bio.
Nana (Hwanhee Kim b. 1980, Seoul) and Felix (Felix Nybergh b. 1985, Espoo) is a Korean-Finnish artist duo working together since 2013.
Nana Hwanhee Kim graduated with BA and MA in Fine-art at Chelsea College of Art & Design(London, UK).
Felix Nybergh holds a BA in Photography from IDEP-Abat Oliba CEU (Barcelona, Spain). Both artists graduated with MA in Fine-art Photography at Aalto University (Helsinki, Finland) where they began workingtogether as an artist duo.
Before their collaboration, Nana, working under the name Kimhwanhee, explored the idea of the frame thattraverses between image and its three-dimensional existence as well as the idea of artistic medium as a physicalcarrier of both artistic labour and personal memory through a series of paintings, sculptures, and photographic media.
Her work has been invited to Thessaloniki Photo Biennale, Greece, was Highly Commended at The WoollahraSmall Sculpture Prize, Australia, and earned her The Young Artist Grant from the Finnish Arts Association.
Through a detached documentary photography approach, Felix Nybergh explored ideas of truth and reality withincultural identity and carried out a series of works interpreting endless repetition and citation of images from aphilosophical standpoint. He was invited to Hangar residency in Barcelona, Spain, and Warp Artist Village in Genk,Belgium.
Since their collaboration started, the two artists have solely concentrated on working as an artist duo,expanding their work to various media such as video, drawing, text, sound, and installation.

Nana & Felix's works have beenshown at numerous solo exhibitions, group exhibitions, and festivals in Finland, Korea, Spain, England, and Germany.
They have been invited as visiting artists at several Artist Residencies, such as Kone Foundation’s Saari Residence (FI), Incheon Art Platform, Artist Residency Temi, and H Art Lab (KR). They have received continuous funding fromseveral public and private institutions and foundations such as Frame-Finland, Kone Foundation and the NationalArts Fund in Finland.
The duo have very recently won Posco Emerging Artist Prize and their works are held in publiccollections such as the Government Art Bank of the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (KR), The
Faber Birren Collection of Books on Color of Robert B. Haas Family Arts Library at Yale University (USA), Posco ArtMuseum, the Mänttä-Vilppula City collection, Turku City collection (FI) and others.

작가소개
나나와 펠릭스는 2013년부터 활동해 온 한국-핀란드 국적의 아티스트 듀오 및 부부로서, 두 작가 모두 핀란드 알토대학원 예술사진학과를 졸업했고, 핀란드 석사 이전에는, 나나(김환희) 작가는 영국 런던 첼시 대학교에서 회화과를, 동 대학원에서 Fine-art학과를 마쳤으며, 펠릭스 뉘베리 작가는 스페인 바르셀로나 IDEP 대학교에서 사진학과 시각커뮤니케이션과를 나왔다.
듀오 로서의 협업 이전엔, 나나(김환희) 작가는 회화, 조형, 사진 매체를 통해 평면과 입체 사이에 존재하는 프레임의 개념을 탐구하고 노동과 기억을 각인하는 예술적 매체에 대한 일련의 작품들을 만들어 왔으며, 그녀의 작품은 그리스 테살로니키 포토비엔날레에 초청되었고, 호주 시드니 울랄하 소형 조각상에서 우수상을 수상하고, 핀란드 예술협회의 신진 작가 기금을 수상했다.
펠릭스(펠릭스 뉘베리)작가는 도큐멘터리 사진형식을 통해 문화적 정체성의 실제와 허구를 추적한 프로젝트 및 이미지의 무제한적 반복과 인용을 철학적인 맥락으로 해석한 프로젝트 등으로, 스페인 바르셀로나 앙가르 레지던시와 벨기에 겡크의 워프 아티스트 빌리지에 선정되어 작품활동을 해왔었다. 이 두 작가는 이후 아티스트 듀오로서의 활동에 전념하면서, 각자의 전문 분야 외에도 영상, 드로잉, 텍스트, 사운드, 설치 등의 다양한 매체로 확장하였고, 한 프로젝트 아래서도 종종 시리즈로 이루어진 작품들을 만들어오고 있다.
나나와 펠릭스의 작품들은 한국 외 스페인, 영국, 독일에서 다수의 개인전, 그룹전 및 페스티벌 등을 통해 꾸준히 선보여져 왔고, 핀란드 코네재단 사리레지던스, 인천아트플랫폼, 대전테미예술창작스튜디오, H아트랩 등의 여러 레지던시에서 작업 활동을 이어오고 있으며, 핀란드 프레임, 코네재단 예술기금, 핀란드 예술진흥원 등의 문화예술재단에서 지속적인 기금을 후원받고 있다. 아티스트 듀오는 최근 포스코미술관 신진 작가 상을 수상하였고 그들의 작품은 국립현대미술관 정부예술은행, 포스코미술관, 미국 예일대 로버트 B. 하스 패밀리 예술도서관의 파버 비렌 컬렉션, 핀란드 투르쿠시 예술컬렉션 등에 소장되어 있다.

The title Nephopolis is a made-up word of two ancient Greek words; nephos, meaning clouds and polis, city. The work mixes two main motives: skyscrapers and clouds. Continuing their recurrent building motif from two previous artworks Koti Ikävä(Home Sick) and Cīvis, Nana & Felix also borrows the lavish-colored cloud motifs from the 19th century court painting of Joseon dynasty The Cranes and Peaches of Immortality by the Sea. The combined two motives illustrate city of skyscrapers towering above the clouds.
최근 신작 네포폴리스 Nephopolis ( 2022. pen on paper)는 고대 그리스어로 구름이라는 뜻의 네포스néphos와 도시라는 폴리스polis를 합성한 단어로 구름 도시라고 해석할 수 있다. 두 부분으로 구성된 이 작품 중 하나는 나나와 펠릭스의 이전 작품 <향수병 鄕愁病>과 <시비스 Civis>에서 반복적으로 사용되어 왔던 건물의 모티브이고, 다른 하나는 조선 시대 궁중 회화인 해학반도도(海鶴蟠桃圖)의 오색금박 구름에서 차용한 모티브이다. 이 두 가지의 모티브는 구름을 뚫고 올라서는 작금의 마천루 도시를 묘사한다.

Neat strait lines of tiny, human-like, figures pour on to an empty digital canvas. The rows stack up, forming buildings. The buildings stack up and a cityscape grows until reaching a point of total saturation, only for the process to repeat in a seemingly never-ending loop. Following the mantra singing of a temple bell, the clumsy, imperfect trace of the hand-drawn lines try to impose a sense of humanity on a sterile, planned and micro-managed setting. This revolt of the organic is, as tends to be the case, embraced, suffocated and incorporated to the relentless force of progress.
