북촌에 위치한 갤러리 컴바인웍스는 정보영 개인전 ‘IN BETWEEN’ 를 2026년 01월 27일부터 02월 14일까지 진행한다.
Artist Jeong Bo young has long explored the boundaries where light, space, and time converge. For over three decades, she has devoted herself entirely to the language of painting. Her contemplations are presented in the solo exhibition IN BETWEEN, held at Combine works Gallery from January 27 to February 14.
(…) A single form fractures, and what was static transforms into movement. Images drift through space; light traverses the wide eastern window and the narrow elongated western window; curtains divide the space into layered thresholds; breath-like currents of air fill the intervals; gazes slowly occupy and migrate across the floor. These fleeting movements frame the space at varying distances. Light, wind, and perception together compose a single frame. Here, painting exists as an event—an occurrence generated by light, time, and perception.(....)
We are always situated in between.
Between arrival and departure, between speech and silence, between what has already passed and what has not yet come, existence remains unsettled—oscillating, moving, lingering, and transforming. IN BETWEEN does not attempt to clearly separate these two states. Instead, it quietly reveals the subtle strata of sensation vibrating between flow and pause.
Standing before Jeong Boyoung’s work, the impulse to explain gradually falls silent. The familiar language we believed we possessed begins to loosen and fall away. Sensations remain in the space before they become names or forms—like a moment just before a breath is taken. Colors and materials coexist without defining one another, while light slowly grazes the surface. The works do not assert meaning; they cannot be precisely named, yet they undeniably touch something within perception. As time lingers, one feels as though breathing alongside the works. Her practice, accumulated over thirty years of painting, is built upon such silence. Repetition, waiting, and sustained contemplation do not fix the image; rather, they open it. Within this unfinished state, each viewer approaches the work through their own memory and emotion.
On the main wall of the exhibition, Flowing and Pause features layers of fabric slowly draped, with glass spheres suspended between cloth and light. Green shadows refracted through light expand across the fabric—not as a single form but as multiple possibilities. The object rests on a shelf, yet its presence trembles upon the fabric. The green glass floats once used by Jeju’s haenyeo(female diver) no longer drift at sea, nor do they fully belong to land. Once supporting the rhythm between submersion and buoyancy at the boundary of water and sky, they now remain on the surface of meaning itself—neither disappearing nor fully revealing themselves, suspended in a threshold state. Jeong Bo young’s painting captures precisely this liminal moment: between appearance and disappearance, the tremor before emotion solidifies into language, the margin before form is defined. This exhibition does not rush toward conclusions. Instead, it gently guides viewers toward their own “in-between” moment—between presence and absence, between recognition and sensation, between the already-there and the not-yet.
The subtitle Listening to Pause speaks of perceiving movement hidden within stillness. Even in pause, there is motion. Though Jeong’s works appear quiet, they continuously shift with the angle of light and the movement of viewers. This is not frozen time, but time moving at an almost imperceptibly slow pace. As the artist notes, this work is not about what is seen, but how one stays.
This exhibition does not hurry time. And within that act of staying, we begin to listen to pause—to recognize that we are always standing here, between light and darkness, perception and sensation, the already-there and the not-yet.

빛·공간 그리고 시간이 맞닿는 경계를 탐구해 온 작가, 정보영. 30년간 오직 회화라는 언어에 몰두한 그의 사유가 개인전《 IN BETWEEN 사이 존재 》로 1월 27일부터 2월 14일까지 컴바인웍스 갤러리에서 진행된다.
우리는 언제나 ‘사이’에 놓여 있다.
도착과 출발 사이, 말과 침묵 사이, 이미 지나간 것과 아직 오지 않은 것의 사이에서 존재는 확정되지 않은 채 흔들리고, 이동하며, 잠시 머물다 다시 변한다.
이번 전시 《IN BETWEEN 사이 존재》부제: 멈춤을 듣다는 이 두 상태의 경계를 선명히 구분하려 하지 않는다. 오히려 흐름과 멈춤 사이에서 미세하게 진동하는 감각의 층위를 조용히 드러낸다.
정보영의 작업 앞에 서면 설명하려는 마음이 먼저 조용해진다. 오히려 우리가 이미 알고 있다고 믿어온 언어들을 하나씩 내려놓게 만든다. 무엇이라 부르기 이전의 상태, 아직 형태를 갖추지 않은 감각이 공간에 머물러 있다. 그것은 완성된 장면이 아니라, 막 숨을 들이쉬기 직전의 시간처럼 느껴진다. 캔버스 위의 색과 재료는 서로를 규정하지 않은 채 조용히 공존하고, 빛은 천천히 표면을 스치고 있다. 작품은 누군가를 향해 어떤 의미도 단정하지 않고 정확히 무엇인지 말할 수는 없었으나 분명 감각 어딘가에 닿아 있다. 작품 앞에 서 있는 시간이 길어질수록 함께 호흡하고 있다는 느낌을 받는다. 30년간 회화에 매진하며 쌓아온 작가의 작업은 그런 침묵 위에서 만들어졌다. 오랜 시간 축적된 회화적 사유 반복된 붓질과 기다림은 화면을 단단하게 고정하기보다 오히려 더 열어둔다. 그 미완의 상태 속에서 개개인의 기억과 감정으로 작품에 다가가게 된다.
전시장 메인 벽면에 놓인 ‘flowing and pause’ 작품에는 여러 겹의 천이 느리게 드리워지고, 유리구는 천과 빛 사이에 머문다. 빛을 통과한 녹색의 그림자는 천 위에 겹겹이 드리워지며 하나의 형상이 아니라 여러 개의 가능성으로 확산한다. 실체는 선반 위에 있으나, 존재는 천 위에서 흔들린다. 선반 위에 놓인 제주 해녀의 녹색 유리 부표는 더 이상 바다를 떠돌지 않지만, 그렇다고 완전히 육지에 속하지도 않는다. 한때 물과 하늘의 경계에서 잠김과 부상의 리듬을 묵묵히 떠받치던 이 사물은 이제 물 위가 아닌 의미의 수면 위에 머문다. 사라지지도, 온전히 드러나지도 않은 채 하나의 임계 상태(threshold state)에 놓여 있는 것이다. 작가의 회화는 바로 이 임계의 순간을 포착한다. 나타남과 사라짐 사이, 감정이 언어로 굳어지기 직전의 미세한 떨림, 형태가 규정되기 이전의 여백. 이 전시는 어떤 결론도 서두르지 않는다. 대신 관람자를 각자의 시간 속 ‘중간 어딘가’ 로 조용히 이끈다. 이는 ‘있음’과 ‘비어 있음’의 사이에서 자신을 나누는 방식이다. 하이데거가 말한 ‘사이-존재(In-between)’란, 바로 이러한 상태를 가리킬 것이다. 우리는 언제나 이미-거기와 아직-아님 사이에서 자신을 열어두고 있는 존재이기 때문이다.
이번 전시의 부제 ‘멈춤을 듣는다’는, 정지 속에 숨어 있는 흐름을 감지하는 태도에 관한 것이다. 멈춤조차 하나의 움직임을 알아차리는 감각.
정보영의 작업은 고요해 보이지만, 빛의 각도와 관객의 이동에 따라 끊임없이 변주된다. 이는 멈춘 시간이 아니라, 아주 느린 속도로 이동하는 시간이다. 작가는 말한다. 이번 작업에서 중요한 것은 ‘보이는 것’이 아니라 '머무는 방식이다’라고...
이 전시는 시간을 재촉하지 않는다. 그리고 그 머무름 속에서, 우리는 비로소 멈춤을 듣는다.
우리가 늘 서 있는 자리가 바로 이곳, 빛과 어둠 사이, 인식과 감각 사이, 이미-거기와 아직-아님 사이임을.
