MY STILLNESS

북촌에 위치한  갤러리  컴바인웍스는   김용철 개인전  ‘ MY STILLNESS ’ 를 2025년 10월17일부터 11월 08일까지 진행한다.

 Yong-chul Kim, who established his artistic foundation at the Stuttgart State Academy of Art and Design (ABK Stuttgart), has been a dedicated painter since 2014, exploring the layers of inner psychology and emotion through his work across Germany and Europe. His paintings transcend the mere representation of the external world, translating the invisible currents of the mind and the vibrations of the unconscious into a language of color and texture. They visually capture the unstable rhythms and inner tensions inherent in emotion.

His solo exhibition [My Stillness], presented in Korea after more than a decade, features approximately ten new works completed at the end of a long journey of contemplation. Held at Combine Works Gallery in Bukchon, Seoul, from October 17 to November 8, this exhibition presents the depth of the artist’s accumulated inner exploration in its most distilled form.

My Stillness is not merely a state of static calm, but a space where subtle vibrations acknowledge each other’s presence. It is an exhibition that visualizes the ceaselessly shifting tremors within. Yong-chul Kim captures the delicate pulses and emotional undercurrents latent within “stillness.” It is the low-frequency wave that emanates from the self—the sound one begins to hear the moment external noise fades away. The artist condenses these waves onto the canvas through color, texture, and the deconstruction of form. His paintings reveal the rhythms of anxiety and chaos lurking beneath the surface of tranquility, approaching the viewer like fragments of memory rising from the deep abyss of the unconscious.

In his new work Strange Light, presented in this exhibition, Yong-chul Kim unfolds the terrain of emotion in an even more metaphorical manner. A beam of light filters through dense foliage, within which the faint silhouette of a black panther emerges. This form, lingering at the boundary between reality and the unconscious without fully revealing itself, appears both unfamiliar and strangely familiar—an emblem of emotions intertwined with fear and compassion.

The “strange light” the artist refers to is both an external gaze and an illumination reflected deep within the self. This light exposes anxiety while simultaneously serving as a conduit for renewed self-recognition. Following the light, the viewer suddenly realizes that this strangeness is, ultimately, the shadow of another self—one that lies dormant within us.

The absence of form on the canvas, often seen in the artist’s work, is not a lack but a device that opens a space for contemplation. As boundaries blur, the scene raises more questions; trembling brushstrokes and pulsating colors record the intersection of external stimuli and inner vibrations. Layers of paint, stacked like strata of the unconscious, possess unfathomable depth; expanding contours and softened edges become a language of emotional ambiguity. The textures that sweep across the surface breathe and pulse like an inner heartbeat. Thus, the work invites not only to be viewed as an image, but to be experienced as an abyss that demands a response. Facing this abyss, the viewer encounters not merely a visual experience, but the echo of their own inner voice. Strange Light reveals the essence of existence precisely through the absence of form, bearing witness simultaneously to the sedimentation of time and the vibrations of emotion.

Ultimately, [My Stillness] is not an exhibition that gazes at silence.It is an experience of listening to the wordless whisper—of reading both old wounds and subtle joys—a place where one witnesses the waves of emotion rising again within stillness. Here, silence is not an end, but a conversation that continues. It is the moment when the wordless circuit flowing between the artist and the world, the other and the self, is switched on.

As Nietzsche said, “In silence, I find myself.” Yong-chul Kim’s world is not a pause, but the vibration of thought returning to the source of existence.  Within it, we encounter our own inner selves in an ongoing dialogue.

슈투트가르트 국립 미술대학(ABK Stuttgart)에서 예술적 기반을 다진 김용철 작가는 2014년부터 독일과 유럽 각지에서 꾸준히 활동하며 인간내면의 심리와 감정의 층위를 탐구하는 회화 작업을 꾸준히 선보여 왔다. 그의 회화는 단순히 외부 세계의 재현에 머무르지 않는다, 보이지 않는 정신의 흐름과 무의식의 진동을 색과 질감이라는 고유한 언어로 번역해 내며, 내적 긴장감을 시각적으로 포착한다.

10여 년 만에 한국에서 선보이는 개인전 《나의 고요》는 오랜 사유의 여정 끝에서 완성된 신작 10여 점으로 구성된다. 이번 전시는 10월 17일부터 11월 8일까지 서울 북촌의 컴바인웍스 갤러리에서 열리며, 작가가 그동안 축적해온 내면 탐구의 깊이를 가장 응축된 형태로 보여준다.

《나의 고요》는 단순한 정적의 상태가 아니라, 작은 진동들이 서로의 존재를 알리는 장이다. 끊임없이 변화시키는 내면의 진동을 시각화한 전시이다. 김용철은 ‘고요’ 속에 잠재된 미세한 떨림과 감정의 흐름을 붙잡는다. 그것은 외부의 소음이 사라진 순간 들려오는 자기 자신으로부터의 낮은 파동이다. 작가는 그 파동을 색채와 질감, 그리고 형체의 해체를 통해 화면 위에 응축시킨다. 그의 회화는 평온의 표면 아래 숨어 있는 불안과 혼돈의 리듬을 드러내며, 마치 무의식의 깊은 심연에서 솟구쳐 오르는 기억의 파편처럼 관람자에게 다가온다.

이번 전시에 선보이는 신작 《낯선 빛》에서 김용철은 감정의 지형을 한층 은유적으로 펼쳐 보인다. 짙은 녹음 사이로 한 줄기 빛이 스며들고, 그 안에 검은 표범의 실루엣이 어렴풋이 떠오른다. 완전하게 모습을 드러내지 않은 채 현실과 무의식의 경계에 머무는 그 형상은 낯설면서도 낯익고, 두려움과 연민이 함께 뒤섞인 감정의 표상으로 다가온다.

작가가 말하는 ‘낯선 빛’ 그것은 외부로부터의 시선 이자 내면 깊숙이 반사되는 빛이다. 그 빛은 불안을 드러내면서도 동시에 자아를 새롭게 인식하게 하는 통로로 작동한다. 관람자는 빛을 따라가다 문득 깨닫게 된다.  낯설음 은 결국 우리 안에 잠들어 있던 또 다른 자아의 그림자임을….

작가의 회화에서 자주 보이는 캔버스 위에서의 형태의 부재는 결핍이 아니라 사유를 여는 장치다. 경계가 흐려질수록 장면은 더 많은 질문을 던지고, 떨리는 붓질과 색의 맥박은 외부 자극과 내면의 파동이 교차하는 지점을 기록한다. 켜켜이 쌓인 물감의 층은 무의식의 지층처럼 깊이를 알 수 없고, 번져가는 윤곽과 흐릿한 경계는 감정의 모호함을 말하는 언어가 된다. 그 표면을 스쳐 지나가는 마티에르는 내면의 맥박처럼 살아 숨 쉰다. 이렇듯 작품은 읽히는 이미지를 넘어 응답을 요구하는 심연으로 열려 있다. 관람자는 그 심연과 마주하며 단순한 시각적 경험을 넘어, 자기 내부의 목소리와 만나게 된다. 《낯선 빛》은 형태의 부재를 통해 오히려 존재의 본질을 드러내는 작업이며, 시간의 퇴적과 감정의 진동을 동시에 증언한다.

결국 《나의 고요》는 침묵을 바라보는 전시가 아니다.

이것은 말없는 속삭임에 귀 기울이며 오래된 상처와 미세한 기쁨을 함께 읽어내는 경험이며, 정적 속에서 다시 일어나는 감정의 파동을 목격하게 하는 자리다. 여기서 침묵은 끝이 아니라, 여전히 이어지는 대화다. 작가와 세계, 타자와 자신 사이에 말없이 흐르는 회로가 켜지는 순간이다.

니체가 “고요 속에서 나는 나를 찾는다”라고 말했듯, 김용철의 세계는 멈춤이 아니라 존재의 근원으로 되돌아가는 사유의 진동이다. 그 속에서 우리는 스스로의 내면을, 여전히 진행 중인 대화로서 마주하게 된다.
