Mindscape

Gallery Combine Works presents a trio exhibition titled [ Mindscape ] by artists Ha Ji-hoon, Jeong Yun-Kyung, and You,Hyeon-Kyeong from Oct 15 to Dec 02, 2024.

In this exhibition, there is a significant commonality among the three artists: they express “emotions and memories” from their hearts through abstract painting.

The spontaneous touches and blending of colors that occur on the canvas, created by layering and smudging, embody great energy. Most importantly, the three artists have spent a long time away from Korea, allowing them to face their inner worlds more honestly.

However, the “Mindscape” they depict using the formativel language of line, surface, and color presents itself in completely different forms. As autumn deepens,

we invite you to encounter the artists’ inner landscapes (Mindscapes) that harmonize and collide with the profoundly Korean scenery of Bukchon Hanok Village (Landscape).

[ARTIST INTRODUCTION]

Ha Ji-hoon (b. 1978) has developed a unique sculptural language, shaped by his emotional deficiency from a childhood spent moving frequently.

This experience led him to concentrate all his senses—sight, hearing, smell—on capturing fleeting landscapes in his memory.

As a result, instead of specifically depicting any location, he expresses it as an abstract image of ‘complete landscape.’ Images from particular landscapes are stacked

into a single mass, allowing the viewer to discover figurative elements within the abstraction, leading to various interpretations, such as faces, jewels, or buildings.

He centers the dominant color on the energy felt from the landscape, with surrounding colors adding depth.

The colors are arranged structurally, just as much as the shapes. By using both brushes and knives, as well as his hands, he seeks to preserve the flowing

emotional lines as they come through his hands while avoiding the patterned use of tools that come with long experience.

He graduated from the Department of fine art(oil painting) at Yeungnam University and studied at the Münster Academy of Fine Arts in Germany,

where he was mentored by Michael Van Ofen, a student of the contemporary art master Gerhard Richter.

Jeong Yun-kyung (b. 1981) creates her mindscapes freely using a variety of materials, including acrylic paint, oil sticks, and paper collage,

based on the emotions she experiences in her daily environment and situations.

She navigates between intention and spontaneity, reflecting her inner emotions and energy.

Various forms of line appear in her works, revealing a balance between Western abstract expressionism and the Orient ink painting traditions.

During the pandemic in the UK, she presented a unique approach by applying digital drawings made with her finger on her phone to her work, resulting in

the “Finger Spell” series. This intriguingly connects with the various shamanistic meanings of traditional East Asian calligraphy and has garnered attention

from international collectors at events such as Art Basel Hong Kong and Frieze Seoul.

She completed her bachelor's degree in Fine Arts at Ewha Womans University, followed by a master's degree in Fine Arts from Slade School

in the UK. After more than 15 years of activity in the UK, she returned to Korea during the pandemic.

You Hyeon-kyeong (b. 1985) does not merely replicate the objects she sees; instead, she translates the emotional elements felt in a given situation onto the canvas with an unhesitating, swift brushstroke. She captures the fleeting atmosphere and the energy derived from the relationship with her subjects,

translating them into the “voice of the brush,” resulting in work that is always vibrant and dynamic. Her subjects include people, landscapes, and objects ,without strict boundaries, and she enjoys creating large-scale pieces. In essence, her work can be described as making visible the invisible realms of what she observes.

She graduated from the Department of Fine Arts (oil painting) at Seoul National University and completed her graduate studies there as well. The artist has received significant attention from many art professionals, including museum curators and critics, since the early stages of her work, and she was

awarded the prestigious [Jongkun Dang Arts Prize] in 2019.

In January 2020, just before the pandemic, she relocated her base of activity to Berlin, Germany, where she continues her extensive international work.

갤러리 컴바인 웍스는 하지훈, 정윤경 그리고 유현경 작가의 3인 기획전 [ Mindscape ]를 2024년 10월 15일부터 11월 2일까지 진행한다.

이번 전시 [ Mindscape]는 인간존재의 본질을 탐구하는 하지훈, 정윤경, 유현경 세 작가의 공통점을 찾아볼 수 있다.

바로 ‘감정과 기억’이다. 이들은 한국을 떠나 오랜 유학 생활과 다양한 문화 속에서 스스로를 성찰하며, 내면의 세계를 깊이 들여다보는 시간들이 많았다. 타국에서의 여러 경험은 작업에 깊이를 더하고, 각자의 내면 풍경 Mindscape 을 더욱 솔직하게 드러내게 하였다. 그 결과물은 단순한 추상화의 형태가 아니라, 심연에서 우러나온 진솔한 감정과 기억의 조각들이다.

우연적 터치와 색의 뒤섞임 그리고 여백의 에너지를 품고 있는 작품들은 이러한 정서를 가장 적절히 표현할 수 있는 매개체로 작용하였다. 작가들은 서로 다른 풍경을 그려내지만, 그 배경에는 공통적으로 내재된 인간의 고독과 불안이 자리하고 있다. 이들은 과거와 현재, 개인과 보편, 감정과 기억이 얽히는 지점에서 새로운 시각적 언어로 탄생시켰다.

작품 앞에서 시간을 보내며 생각하고 느리게 보기를 추천하는 [ Mindsacpe ] 전시는 각자가 지닌 빛을 머금고 밀어내며 때로는 고요하고, 때로는 격렬하게 끊임없는 질문과 대화를 시도해 보면 어떨까....

작품 속에 부유하고 있는 다양한 존재의 이야기들, 인간의 보편적이고 복잡한 감정을 가시적으로 드러나게 하며 온전한 자기 자신과의 회복 그리고 내 안의 세상과 소통하게 될 것이다.

북촌에 위치한 컴바인웍스 갤러리는 하지훈, 정윤경, 그리고 유현경의 개성있는 작가 3인 기획전 [ Mindscape ] 를 2024년 10월 15일~11월02일 까지 진행한다.

하지훈 Ha,Ji Hoon

어린 시절 잦은 이사와 독일의 오랜 유학생활을 거치면서 장소에 대한 기억과 낯선 느낃들은 작가의 작업속에 미묘한 감각으로 스며들었음을 느낄 수 있다.

어디를 가든 시각, 청각, 후각 등 모든 감각을 집중하여 스쳐 지나가는 풍경을 기억 속에 담으려 했다는 작가는 그 결과, 어떤 장소를 구체적으로 묘사하기보다는 추상적 이미지의 ‘완전한 풍경’으로 표현하는 독특한 조형언어를 만들어냈다. 하지훈의 작품은 막대기,나이프 등 도구사용을 넘어 직관적인 손을 사용해 흐르는 감정의 선을 최대한 지켜내며 이야기를 전달하고 있다.

물감의 표정까지 읽을 수 있는 살아있는 생명체와 같은 구상이자 추상회화를 선보이고있다.

영남대학교 미술대학 서양화과를 졸업하였으며, 이후 독일 뮌스터 쿤스트 아카데미에서 수학했습니다. 그곳에서 현대미술의 거장 게르하르트 리히터(Gerhard Richter)의 제자인 미카엘 반 오펜(Michael Van Ofen)에게 많은 가르침을 받았다.

2009년 독일에서의 개인전을 시작으로 국내외 다수의 개인전과 단체전에 참여하였고 마인쯔 아이젠투엄 미술상, 금호 영아티스트, 대구미술관 Y아티스트 등에 선정. 국립현대미술관미술은행, 대구미술관,영은미술관, 금호미술관, WGZ bank,Germany 등에 작품이 소장

작가는 그림을 그린다는 것은 단순히 자신을 표현하는 것이 아니라, 탐험해 나가는 과정에서 내면의 심리나 상황을 추론해 나가는 신비로운 과정이라고 표현합니다. 다양한 재료인 아크릴물감, 오일스틱, 스펀지, 종이콜라주를 활용하여 마음의 풍경을 자유롭게 그리며, 의도성과 계획성을 넘어 내면의 감정과 에너지를 투영한 작품들을 선보입니다.

작품에서는 다양한 형태의 선(Line)이 등장하며, 서양의 추상 표현주의와 동양의 수묵화 전통 사이의 균형을 발견할 수 있습니다. 특히, 코로나 시기에 작업실을 가지 못했던 작가는 휴대폰 화면에 손가락으로 그린 디지털 드로잉을 바탕으로 한 ‘핑거 스펠(Finger Spell; 손가락 주문)’ 시리즈를 발표하였습니다. 이 시리즈는 동양의 전통 서예와 캘리그라피가 지닌 주술적 의미를 현대적으로 재조명하며, 아트바젤 홍콩과 프리즈 서울 등 국제적인 무대에서 주목받고 있습니다.

이화여자대학교에서 서양화 및 한국화를 전공한 후, 영국 Slade School에서 순수미술 석사과정을 수료한 작가는 15년 이상 영국에서 활동하며 현대회화의 새로운 가능성을 모색해 왔습니다. 한국으로 돌아온 지금, 작가는 더욱 역동적이고 대담한 색채와 형태를 탐구하며 ‘핑거 스펠’ 시리즈를 통해 관객과 소통하고 있습니다.

유현경 You HyeonKyeong

작가는 어떤 대상을 보고 그대로 그리는 것이 아니라, 그 상황에서 느껴지는 감정적 요소를 망설임 없는 빠른 필치로 화폭에 옮긴다. 일순간에 스치는 분위기, 대상과의 관계성 등을 통해 느껴지는 에너지를 포착하고 ‘붓의 목소리’로 변환하여 항상 기운과 생동감이 가득하다. 그림의 소재는 인물, 풍경, 소품 등 특별한 경계를 두지 않으며, 과감한 붓질로 대상의 형체를 의도적으로 뭉그러뜨리듯 한 표현은 유현경 작품의 특징이다. 한마디로 ‘대상을 보고 있지만, 보이지 않는 영역을 가시화하는 작업’ 이라 할 수 있다.

서울대학교 미술대학 서양화과를 졸업 후 동 대학원을 수료하였다. 초반 작업 시절부터 큐레이터나 평론가 등 많은 미술 관계자들에게 커다란 주목을 받아 왔으며, 2011년 독일의 슐로스 플뤼쇼브, 2014년 스위스 취리히의 로테 파브릭, 2016년 미국 뉴욕의 두산 레지던시 등, 2019년 국내 최고권위의 종근당예술지상을 수상하였다. 2020년 1월, 독일 베를린으로 옮긴 후에는 폭넓은 국제적 활동과 특정 장르에 얽매이지 않는 독자적인 작품세계를 구축하고 있다.
